The Great Ocean Road trip

This trip was the first chance for us both to really stop and take time to admire the beauty of Victoria. And it happened very spontaneously, I might add. We went to this memorable trip was on my second week here and Nelson's first week here (4th July 2009). Here's how it actually started.

Andrew Joanne Cécile/ Nathalie

Hey, I'm taking Cécile and Nathalie to Great Ocean Road this weekend. I promised them looooong ago that I would bring them there. You wana join us?
Great Ocean Road? What's that?
Oh, it's this long drive along the road where it's very scenic. There are "rocks" which are very famous

Then they showed me the pictures of the "rocks". And boy, was I ignorant to not know what or where Great Ocean Road is. It's so beautiful even by looking at the pictures. And I immediately said a long

Yesssssssssssssssssssssss

This is a map that I've found on the web that highlighted the attractions along the road.

So we started our journey early in the morning. First we went to Richmond to pick up our ride. Here's our ride:

We then went to the city to pick up the girls and another three of Andrew's friend. So there are 8 of us, Andrew, Cécile, Nathalie, Mark, Sara, another of Andrew's friend (sorry I can't remember your name, I'm lousy at remembering chinese names) and of course there's me and my dear Nelson. So all of us manage to fit into the truck. Of course we can, we are all so slim (ehem..) And so we started our long long drive. We went by the Geelong way as it is further and more scenic, and we took the highway to return to Melbourne as everyone was exhausted by then.

The first impression that Geelong gives anyone is that it is a peaceful countryside. But it's actually a city, and it happens to be the second largest city in Victoria! What do we see? Farms. Sheeps and cows. And more farms. Didn't take any picture along the way. Our first stop was the Torquoy Surf Beach. It was windy. Very windy. And cold too. We took a bridge to get to the beach. Here's how it looks like:

Magnificent isn't it? So we got to the beach. There are quite a lot of people surfing, obviously, coz it's a surf beach! I wonder how they can surf in this kind of weather?! And we were supposed to see a lot of hot beach hunks. But I didn't spot any (coz the hottest guys is already standing by my side). The beach wasn't that nice. So we pose on the rocks instead. This is our first group photo.

Then it started drizzling. So we decided there's nothing else to see at the beach and went back to the car and continue our journey. Somewhere along the way, we stopped and snapped some pictures. Here's one of me and Nelson.

There were more breathtaking scenes like this along the way. But there're just too much to be posted here. You just got to see it for yourself! Our next stop was at another beach. And of course, to feed our stomach. We had a little picnic at this beautiful beach, and fortunately, the sun comes out again at that time. We even saw rainbowS!! In fact, we saw more than 5 rainbows along the trip.

Then we saw seaguls! They sure look cute. But they keep eyeing on our sandwiches. Shoo~ Bad seaguls! Not cute! Not cute at all!

After lunch, our next destination was supposed to be waterfall. We were supposed to check out the waterfall before we check into our apartment. Couldn't find the waterfall (the GPS's fault!) and we ended up in a rainforest instead. It was freezing cold. According to the car's thermometer it was 7 °C. But I suspect it was colder than that. Nothing special. Probably coz Malaysia has got loads of these. We snapped some pictures anyway.

It was getting dark by the time we left the rainforest. Saw a kangaroo sign on our way back to the apartment. Didn't see any kangaroos though.

All of our stomachs were growling by the time we hit the apartment. The first thing to do was of course, to check out the condition of the apartment. There were holes in the built in robes. THREE huge holes in THREE different locations. And a broken heater. And apparently, the management already know about this. So, there's nothing we can do bout it except.... DINNER!! Thank you Cécile and Nathalie for cooking us the lovely dinner. Don't cry :'( Everyone was quite tired so we went to bed early (or at least I did!). This is how it looks like from the apartment.

The next day was another beautiful day. Snapped this picture right in front of the apartment.

So, where are we going? Ah-ha...We're going to find waterfall!! And this time, we've got it right!! We went to Erskine Falls. It was super cold in the morning. About 4 °C I think. So again, we've seen waterfalls back in Malaysia. Only, the water here is much clearer =P There's nothing much to tell. So I'll just show pictures.

Next thing, we went back to pack up our stuff and checked out. Then we went to Lorne to get some souvenirs (for ourselves lah). The next thing is, LUNCH!!  We finally come to a stop at Apollo Bay and we went hunting for food.. After walking up and down the street a few times (I might be exaggerating a bit), we settle for a seafood restaurant (someone was craving for fish n chips). The portion is huge, and everyone is super full. So we went for a walk at the beach and pose a little.

And guess what? We saw seagul again! This time, it's all alone. Probably lost. Poor thing.

After a long walk, we hit the road again. And this time, we saw koala sign.

It's ugly, if you ask me.The next stop was the Cumberland River.

And needless to say, it was windy. One moment it was sunny, another it was drizzling. Remember what I said about the weather in the last post? Ha! And I can see people fishing in this kind of weather. It's just an Australia thing I guess.

Then we were back on the road. Manage to snap some pictures along the way. I find it quite nice, but I can't remember the name of the place. Sorry.

And there's the sun again! Our next stop was supposed to be the iconic Cape Otway lighthouse. We went all the way in (and believe me when I say it's a LOOOONG way in) and came to find that there's an entrance fee implied for every visitors. We decided that it's just a lighthouse and moved on. There's no way that we can see the lighthouse from the entrance. So, no pictures. But, we saw a pair of koalas hanging on the tree on our way in, so I guess the drive in was not a waste after all. Speaking of this pair of koala, they have a real funny story.

One (X) was hanging on the branch, and the other (Y) was trying to pull it down. I think Y was hurting X and so X made a really loud, painful sound. It was scary. I've decided I don't like koalas after all. So, here's our theory.

X Y

I see cameras! Let's pose!
No! I'm not in the mood!
Come-lah *pull*
Don't want!! Ahhhhh~ *scream*
Tak mau sudah. I pose myself.

You might have another theory, but that's when we snapped this picture.

And finally, the last stop. We saved the best for the last. The long awaited "ROCKS" or the so-called Twelve Apostles at Port Campbell. Though I've gotta admit that it's really breathtaking. It was windy and it was freezing, but it was all worth it.

Then we head back to Melbourne. And so the journey to the Great Ocean Road ends. The memories will always live in us all. This is not the end. It's just the beginning :)
